  6. A typically Roman building, elliptical in shape, it was similar to the modern stadium. The early
  7.  wooden structures were followed by constructions in stone, of which the Amphitheater in \b \cf4 \ATXht1086 Pompeii\b0 \cf0 \ATXht0  is the oldest example (80 BC). These buildings had an arena surrounded by tiers for the spectators, and an external face 
  8. that usually had several orders of arches. The \b \cf1 \ATXht1 amphitheaters\b0 \cf0 \ATXht0  were used to stage the highly popular gladiatorial spectacles, hunts, and sometimes \b \cf1 \ATXht14 naumachies\b0 \cf0 \ATXht0 , grand naval battles that repro
